Grown Play Raises Funds for
Homeless |
Plans
are afoot to fleece
down-to-earth
mechanic, Merv, of
his most valuable
asset, the local
garage. But there's
more to Merv than
meets the eye,
including his not so
'down-to-earth'
friends in high
places. Bookings are
now open for
“Mechanics”, a
warm-hearted play
featuring
skullduggery, live
music and laughs.
Written and directed
by David Renn,
“Mechanics” is the
latest of Mt Cotton
Drama Group’s famous
home-grown plays.
All proceeds of the
opening night
performance on
Friday, April 28th
will go to BABI
Youth and Family
Support to assist
local young people
and families in
need.
Individual and group
bookings are
welcome. Why not get
a work or social
group together and
make a night of it –
after all, it’s a
world premiere!
Tickets are $15
(adults) and $12
(concession). Doors
open at 7:30pm and
the performance
begins at 8:00pm.
The venue is Mt
Cotton Community
Hall, Mt Cotton Rd,
Mt Cotton (corner of
Seaview Street, two
minutes south of Sirromet Winery).
A cash bar will be
open and a light
supper will be
available at
interval. Ticket
numbers are strictly
limited. To book for
this very special
fundraiser, contact
Sue at BABI on 3393
4176 or email

Where
can they go? |
It’s
become a sad
routine. Recently,
BABI Youth and
Family Support was
forced to turn away
three more young
people seeking
crisis
accommodation.
The young people
aged 14, 17 and19
were given a single
night’s supervised
accommodation in a
local motel, while
BABI workers
desperately sought a
transfer to the
nearest refuge at Mt
Gravatt. No vacancy
was available, and
alternative
accommodation is
still urgently
required.
Crisis accommodation
is scarce because it
is expensive to
operate, requiring
24 hour staffing.
BABI is only funded
to provide medium
term accommodation
under the Supported
Accommodation
Assistance Program
(SAAP).
“In 2004/2005 we
were forced to turn
away 440 young
people with 129
dependent children.
Some 73 of those
children were under
five years of age,”
said Di Fletcher,
President of BABI.
“Let me be clear
about this. These
are not young people
leaving home on a
whim. Typically,
they’re young people
from our local
community dealing
with traumatic
personal situations.
Many have children
of their own.”

Help
for Young Homeless |
Young
people accommodated
by BABI Youth and
Family Support will
have a little more
to cheer about this
Christmas thanks to
Beta Sigma Phi. A
recent fundraising
lunch organized by
the women’s
friendship
organization raised
$1000 for BABI’s
Homelessness
Program. “Beta Sigma
Phi shows consistent
leadership in
community giving,”
said BABI Manager,
Shadni Bonétt. “We
are very pleased
that they’ve chosen
to support BABI’s
work with young
people.” The
Homelessness Program
offers supported
accommodation,
information, advice,
referral,
counselling and
mediation for 16 to
25 year olds who are
homeless or at risk
of homelessness.
BABI accommodates up
to 30 young people,
including children
of young parents.
Accommodation
options include a
purpose-built house
for students at
secondary school
with no family
support. As well as
assisting young
people who are
homeless or at risk
of homelessness,
BABI supports
students at risk of
leaving school
early, young
offenders, young
parents and parents
of adolescents.
BABI’s new youth
space keeps young
people engaged and
connected with
community life.

Boat Comes in for BABI |
 Rotary’s
2005 Charity Sail Day was so
successful that next year’s
event is already pencilled
in diaries across the
district. The major
beneficiary of the event was
BABI Youth and Family
Support. Don Lyell,
President of the Rotary Club
of Wynnum Manly, recently
took pleasure in presenting
a $5000 cheque to BABI
Manager, Shadni Bonétt. “I’d
like to thank the Rotary
Club of Wynnum Manly and
everyone who supported this
wonderful fundraiser,” said
Ms Bonétt. “Many young
people in our community are
growing up without adequate
family support and
nurturing.” “Rotary’s
generous donation will
enable BABI to give these
young people and their
families better access to
support and safe, affordable
living options.” As well as
assisting young people who
are homeless or at risk of
homelessness, BABI supports
students at risk of leaving
school early, young
offenders, young parents and
parents of adolescents.
BABI’s new youth space keeps
young people engaged and
connected with community
life. If you'd like to make
a tax deductible donation to
BABI please call Ann Chandra

National
PM's Award for Wynnum
Partnership! |
It’s
official: BABI and
Bayside Recruitment have
Australia’s best
partnership between a
community organisation
and a small business.
On April 13th the
Minister for Family and
Community Services, Kay
Patterson, presented the
two Wynnum organisations
with the 2004 Prime
Minister’s Award for
Excellence in Community
Business Partnership
(Small Business
Category), overcoming
stiff competition from
finalists in Western
Australia and the
Northern Territory.
The Prime Minister’s
Awards recognise
partnerships that
actively contribute to
greater social cohesion
and stronger communities
through shared
commitment, energy and
creativity.

BABI
Rallies Against Cuts |
 Draped
in blankets to highlight
the plight of homeless
people forced to sleep
rough every night, BABI
staff recently joined
hundreds of other
homelessness workers and
activists from around
South East Queensland to
rally against funding
cuts.
With a quarter of the
nation’s homeless
population, Queensland
receives only 16.6% of
Commonwealth funds for
accommodation and
support.
BABI fears this funding
may be further reduced,
forcing Wynnum Manly’s
only local provider of
accommodation for the
homeless to cut vital
services.

Easter
Nestegg for BABI |
|
 When
Metropolitan Funerals’
Lynn Manning heard about
BABI’s efforts to
establish a youth space
in Wynnum, she decided
to lend a hand.
An Easter basket filled
with delicious chocolate
and gourmet goodies was
duly handed over to BABI
Manager, Lynn Rose, to
be raffled off.
“When a local community
organisation does great
work with marginalised
young people, they
deserve the support of
the local business
community,” said Ms
Manning. “If we all do
our bit, maybe BABI will
be able achieve a few
more miracles!”

Caltex backs
BABI |
 If
parenting is the hardest
job of all, imagine what
it’s like for a 16 year
old with no family
support.
Lytton Refinery Manager
Andrew Brewer did, and
was motivated to donate
$2,500 on behalf of
Caltex to BABI Youth and
Family Support.
Caltex staff “earned”
the donation for BABI by
achieving an impressive
6 weeks free of
workplace accident or
injury.
