Home Grown Play Raises Funds for Homeless

Plans are afoot to fleece down-to-earth mechanic, Merv, of his most valuable asset, the local garage. But there's more to Merv than meets the eye, including his not so 'down-to-earth' friends in high places. Bookings are now open for “Mechanics”, a warm-hearted play featuring skullduggery, live music and laughs. Written and directed by David Renn, “Mechanics” is the latest of Mt Cotton Drama Group’s famous home-grown plays.

All proceeds of the opening night performance on Friday, April 28th will go to BABI Youth and Family Support to assist local young people and families in need.

Individual and group bookings are welcome. Why not get a work or social group together and make a night of it – after all, it’s a world premiere!

Tickets are $15 (adults) and $12 (concession). Doors open at 7:30pm and the performance begins at 8:00pm. The venue is Mt Cotton Community Hall, Mt Cotton Rd, Mt Cotton (corner of Seaview Street, two minutes south of Sirromet Winery).
A cash bar will be open and a light supper will be available at interval. Ticket numbers are strictly limited. To book for this very special fundraiser, contact Sue at BABI on 3393 4176 or email admin@babi.org.au

 Community: Where can they go?

BABI Youth & Family SupportIt’s become a sad routine. Recently, BABI Youth and Family Support was forced to turn away three more young people seeking crisis accommodation.
The young people aged 14, 17 and19 were given a single night’s supervised accommodation in a local motel, while BABI workers desperately sought a transfer to the nearest refuge at Mt Gravatt. No vacancy was available, and alternative accommodation is still urgently required.

Crisis accommodation is scarce because it is expensive to operate, requiring 24 hour staffing. BABI is only funded to provide medium term accommodation under the Supported Accommodation Assistance Program (SAAP).

“In 2004/2005 we were forced to turn away 440 young people with 129 dependent children. Some 73 of those children were under five years of age,” said Di Fletcher, President of BABI.
“Let me be clear about this. These are not young people leaving home on a whim. Typically, they’re young people from our local community dealing with traumatic personal situations. Many have children of their own.”

 Smart Fundraiser

BABI Youth & Family SupportShandni BonettBABI CEO Shadni Bonétt recently accepted a cheque for $350 from Mike Summers of Smart Supplies, Brisbane’s online computer and office supplies retailer with a difference. Customers of Smart Supplies generated the funds by nominating BABI for a 2% rebate on every purchase. Ms Bonétt urged local businesses to consider joining the rebate scheme to support BABI.

“This program provides an ongoing fundraising stream for BABI at no extra cost to businesses. Smart Supplies sells everything you need in an office, and the savings on many items are unbeatable. It’s a win/win opportunity for business and the local community,” said Ms Bonétt.

 Help for Young Homeless

BABI Youth & Family SupportYoung people accommodated by BABI Youth and Family Support will have a little more to cheer about this Christmas thanks to Beta Sigma Phi. A recent fundraising lunch organized by the women’s friendship organization raised $1000 for BABI’s Homelessness Program. “Beta Sigma Phi shows consistent leadership in community giving,” said BABI Manager, Shadni Bonétt. “We are very pleased that they’ve chosen to support BABI’s work with young people.” The Homelessness Program offers supported accommodation, information, advice, referral, counselling and mediation for 16 to 25 year olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. BABI accommodates up to 30 young people, including children of young parents. Accommodation options include a purpose-built house for students at secondary school with no family support. As well as assisting young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, BABI supports students at risk of leaving school early, young offenders, young parents and parents of adolescents. BABI’s new youth space keeps young people engaged and connected with community life.

 Trivia Champs Snare Bowls Trophy

BABI Youth & Family SupportBABI Margaret VoteA triumphant Raine & Horne team took home the inaugural Bayside Recruitment Corporate BABI Barefoot Bowls Trophy on Sunday – without setting foot on the green. When weather forecasters began predicting rain last week, organisers of the charity event switched from Plan A (a barefoot bowls tournament) to Plan B, a trivia quiz.

Local business Bayside Recruitment was the major sponsor of the event. Managing Director, Ursula Wilkinson, said that despite the weather the day was a great success, with many promising to return next year and challenge other businesses to join in competing for the trophy. Teams enjoyed a gourmet barbecue lunch while listening to the exquisite sounds of live flute, clarinet and rain on the roof of Wynnum Manly Leagues Bowls Club. Accepting the trophy on behalf of the Raine and Horne team, Margaret Vote vowed to return to defend their title on the green in 2006.

Boat Comes in for BABI

BABI Youth & Family SupportRotary of Wynnum and ManlyRotary’s 2005 Charity Sail Day was so successful that next year’s event is already pencilled in diaries across the district. The major beneficiary of the event was BABI Youth and Family Support.  Community: National PM's Award for Wynnum Partnership!

BABI Youth & Family SupportIt’s official: BABI and Bayside Recruitment have Australia’s best partnership between a community organisation and a small business.

On April 13th the Minister for Family and Community Services, Kay Patterson, presented the two Wynnum organisations with the 2004 Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Community Business Partnership (Small Business Category), overcoming stiff competition from finalists in Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

The Prime Minister’s Awards recognise partnerships that actively contribute to greater social cohesion and stronger communities through shared commitment, energy and creativity.

 Community: Milestone for Passionate Partnership

BABI Youth & Family SupportMilestone for Passionate PartnershipUrsula Wilkinson believes passionately in BABI and the power of community-business partnership. Since Bayside Recruitment opened in 2003 she has donated $10 per job placement to BABI Youth and Family Support. When the total amount donated recently hit $7,000, staff of both organisations united in celebration.

“The whole Bayside Recruitment team is 100% behind BABI. On top of the buzz we get every time we place someone in a job, we have the pleasure of knowing we’re doing something positive for the local community. It’s an unbeatable combination,” said Ms Wilkinson.

 Community: BABI Rallies Against Cuts

BABI Youth & Family SupportHomelessness RallyDraped in blankets to highlight the plight of homeless people forced to sleep rough every night, BABI staff recently joined hundreds of other homelessness workers and activists from around South East Queensland to rally against funding cuts.

With a quarter of the nation’s homeless population, Queensland receives only 16.6% of Commonwealth funds for accommodation and support.

BABI fears this funding may be further reduced, forcing Wynnum Manly’s only local provider of accommodation for the homeless to cut vital services.

 Community: Easter Nestegg for BABI

BABI Youth & Family SupportLynn Rose and Lynn MannWhen Metropolitan Funerals’ Lynn Manning heard about BABI’s efforts to establish a youth space in Wynnum, she decided to lend a hand.

An Easter basket filled with delicious chocolate and gourmet goodies was duly handed over to BABI Manager, Lynn Rose, to be raffled off.

“When a local community organisation does great work with marginalised young people, they deserve the support of the local business community,” said Ms Manning. “If we all do our bit, maybe BABI will be able achieve a few more miracles!”
