Q / Answers

What is SAAP?
SAAP stands for Supported Accommodation Assistance Program.

It includes share houses (with a live-in caretaker),   1 bedroom units (with a caretaker on site) and        2 bedroom townhouses. All the share houses and one-bedroom units are located in Wynnum. Townhouses may be available in the broader

Wynnum/Manly/Redlands Bayside area. To get this type of housing, you will have to agree to working with a BABI worker on a support  plan.

What is a support plan?
A support plan is directly linked to your goals and is an agreement between yourself and a BABI worker, about how with the assistance of a BABI worker you may work towards those goals.
Who can apply?
Males and females aged between 16 and 22 years who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, have links to the Wynnum/Manly/Redlands area and are requiring supported accommodation, can apply for a BABI house.

Couples and young parents who fit the above criteria can apply for the 2 bedroom townhouses.

Before being offered BABI accommodation you must be on the Department of Housing’s wait list (if you are eligible). It will not effect your options with BABI if you are not eligible for the Department of Housing. A BABI worker can help you with this.

How much will it cost
Rent is approximately 25% of your income, plus any rent assistance you may be eligible for. Rent will never exceed marker rent.

For example, if you’re under 21 single and on a Centrelink benefit, you could pay as little as $45 (approximately) a week rent. Electricity is extra. Food and personal needs are the responsibility of the young person.

You don’t have to pay a bond but you do have to pay a relocation fee (generally $10 per week) which is similar to a bond without having to pay a bond up front.

How long can you stay?
Generally tenancies in the share houses and units are 12 months, as long as you pay the rent and keep the rules set out in the tenancy agreement.
How long will you have to wait
The waiting time depends on vacancies and how many other people are on the waitlist. This may be anywhere between 1 week to 1 year, sometimes longer for those waiting for a 2 bedroom townhouse.
How do you apply for a BABI place?
Call BABI or drop into the BABI office and ask to speak to a worker from the SAAP team.

Initially, a worker may speak to you over the phone or in the office. If you fit out criteria, you will be asked to come into the office for an interview.

If successful, your name will go on the waitlist until a vacancy comes up. It is very important to keep in contact with BABI if your name is on the waitlist and tell us if there are any changes to your contact details. If you change address or telephone number and don’t tell us, we will be unable to contact you and you will miss out when your turn comes up.

When there is a vacancy, you will be invited back to look at the place and if sharing, you will be able to meet other people living in the house and the caretaker before moving in.
