Nu-Lec Industries manufactures and exports intelligent pole-mounted auto reclosing circuit breakers at its Lytton design and manufacturing facility.

In plain English, these are the large metal boxes you see on power poles all over Brisbane. When there is a line problem, these clever devices work out whether to shut down or reboot the supply of power.

Nu-Lec and its 200 staff have united to raise funds amounting to an impressive sum for BABI in 2005. Staff gave gold coin donations at workplace barbecues and ran raffles over a 12-month period to raise half the total amount, then the company kicked in an equal amount.

In addition, BABI received two donations totalling 3,600 Euros (about AU 6,300) from Schneider Electric, the Paris-based parent company of Nu-lec Industries.

The Schneider Electric Foundation made the donations as part of its LULI program following a submission from Nu-Lec. LULI is an international mobilization campaign that supports sustainable partnerships developed with local community organisations assisting young people.

The money has helped fund BABI’s Homelessness Program, which offers supported accommodation, information, advice, referral and mediation for 15 to 21 year olds who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

BABI accommodates up to 30 young people (including children of young parents) at any given time. Nu-Lec has set up a staff committee to drive its fundraising efforts for BABI, and many BABI staff have had the pleasure of meeting committee members and other Nu-Lec staff at the company’s regular barbecues.

Nu-Lec Executive General Manager, Wendy Minné, says Nu-Lec is proud to be associated with BABI as part of Schneider’s worldwide commitment to community involvement.

BABI is equally proud to be associated with this exceptionally generous local business. Nu-Lec’s outstanding commitment to the young people and families of Wynnum Manly is a wonderful example of corporate social responsibility, and has contributed substantially to BABI’s financial viabilty.

If parenting is the hardest job of all, imagine what it’s like for a 16 year old with no family support. When Lytton Refinery Manager Andrew Brewer thought about it, he was motivated to donate $2,500 to BABI on behalf of Caltex.

Caltex staff “earned” the donation for BABI by achieving an impressive 6 weeks free of workplace accident or injury.

“Caltex and its employees are part of the Bayside community, so we’re particularly pleased to support such a worthwhile local cause,” said Lytton Refinery Manager, Andrew Brewer. “BABI does a terrific job for young people
and families in need of a helping hand.”

The lion’s share of the donation went towards an intensive live-in parenting workshop for up to eight young parents and their children. The workshop was run by BABI’s Family Support Program, which also offers counselling and support, advocacy and referral services to young parents accommodated by BABI.

The remainder of the donation went to a small revolving loan scheme administered by BABI’s Homelessness Program. Through this scheme young people leaving BABI accommodation to live independently have access to small interest-free loans to assist with the purchase of whitegoods and furniture.
