The Family Support Program is a one worker, part-time program, operating four days per week.

The program is funded by the Department of Communities Queensland, under the Child Protection and Family Support Program.

The program primarily services the Wynnum / Manly community, with some clients also coming from the Redlands community.

The program provides counselling, referral, educative and support services to:

Parents of adolescents;
Young parents who are accommodated by BABI;
Young parents who have exited BABI’s Accommodation Program.

Objectives of the Program:

To improve relationships between young people and their families and reduce the likelihood of family breakdown;
To increase young people’s and families’ access to a range of resources: information, education, training and support groups;
To improve families’ skills and knowledge in the area of parenting;
To promote families and parenting positively in the community;
To provide parenting skills education, support and outreach to young parents and their children;
To provide support to young parents which will enable them to maintain safe & stable accommodation.

Parenting & Enjoying Teenagers

Parenting and Enjoying Teenagers is a BABI Parent Education program, specifically targeting the parents of adolescents.

BABI has designed and delivered this program continuously for 20 years. We were recently awarded a Queensland Child Protection Award 2006 for 'Education Initiative.'

The program has an early intervention / prevention focus, aiming to provide parents with a workable framework for parenting teenagers.

This program runs 4 times per year in school term times. Please contact us for more details and scheduled times.

The objectives of the course are:

parental understanding of adolescent behaviour and development;
improvement in communication and parent-adolescent relationships;
increased parental confidence;
decrease in parent / adolescent conflict;
parenting with respect;
parents increased awareness of their own needs; and
importance of your relationship with your teenager/s.

YOUNG PARENTS’ GROUP

Run by the Family Support Program, this informal group for young parents / expectant parents will help you meet other young parents.

It’s an opportunity to share information, let the kids play, make friends and join in some activities. The Young Parents' Group runs fortnightly on Wednesday mornings. Please contact us for more details and dates.

Intended for: Young parents under 25 years of age, and your children.

COUNSELLING & SUPPORT

The Family Support Program provides individual and family group counselling work with parents of adolescents in the Wynnum/ Redlands area, within this part of the program.

This is to assist parents who are having difficulties in issues of parenting their adolescent children. These sessions are held at the BABI office.

'SAME HOUSE DIFFERENT LANDLORD' ACCOMMODATION

The Same House Different Landlord Program is a Housing QLD initiative.

Under this program, Housing allocates six, two bedroom properties from public housing stock to BABI.

These properties are generally used to accommodate young parents and their children.

BABI’s role is to tenant & manage the properties, and most importantly, to provide support to the tenants for a minimum of six months.

At the end of the support period the tenant can ‘sign up’ as a direct tenant of Housing and remain in the same property.

The Family Support Worker provides support to these young people, while BABI's Accommodation Team handles the accommodation side and property
management side.

COSTS FOR THIS PROGRAM

BABI’s Family Support Program is funded by the Queensland Government Department of Communities.

Participants in the “Parenting & Enjoying Teenagers” Group are asked to pay $40.00 for the group [Negotiable].

There is no fee for services of Counselling Sessions or other Support Work. Donations are always welcome.
