Youth COUNSELLOR

Youth Counselling is one of the services provided by the Youth and Community Program. The Youth Counsellor provides counselling and mediation for young people (aged 10-22), who are in need of generalist counselling, and for young people (aged 10 -17) who are at risk of entering the juvenile justice system or who are already involved in the youth justice system. Youth Counselling is available for young people and their families living in the Wynnum/Redlands area. Counselling is provided 3 days per week.

The counselling service uses a collaborative, strength-based, client-centred framework that focuses on the importance of the relationship with clients throughout the intervention to address risk factors and encourage the young person’s fullest development.

Counselling offers a safe, respectful and supportive place for people to talk and explore their inner worlds.  Counselling invites people to contemplate areas of their lives.  During counselling people choose what they wish to talk about, a client directs the conversation. Counsellors ask questions during a session but a client may choose to answer or not to answer questions.

Counselling is voluntary. People are informed that BABI counselling is voluntary and they may choose not to attend at any time. There may be some circumstances where a person is required to attend counselling as a condition of a legal requirement.  In these circumstances a person has the right to choose another counselling service if BABI does not suit their needs and they are also able to choose what they wish to discuss during counselling.
