YOUTH SUPPORT COORDINATOR PROGRAM

The Youth Support Coordinator program supports young people who are at risk of disengaging, or who have recently disengaged, from education. Youth Support Coordinators (YSC’s) provide direct support to help students re-engage with education.

BABI YSC’s provide direct services to State Government Secondary Schools and a referral service to Private Schools throughout the Wynnum and Redlands areas.

The YSC program is funded by the Department of Education and the Department of Communities, which manages the program.

As society has evolved, so have the needs of our young people and the demands placed upon them. The YSC program aims to identify the concerns and needs that impact young people and their ability to engage in education, and to provide a service that is flexible, and responsive.

Who do Youth Support Coordinators work with?

YSC’s work with young people, aged between 14 and 17, who are at risk of disengaging, or who have recently disengaged, from education. Exceptions to the age parameters may be sought and provided with Departmental approval.

What services do Youth Support Coordinators offer?

YSC’s work to help young people to stay engaged or re-engage in education, by helping them resolve the issues that interfere with their ability to complete their schooling. They offer a range of services, including:

·        Face-to-face support and counselling,

·        Help with school issues,
·        Referrals to other agencies that provide support,
·        Group work,
·        Mediation,
·        Information sharing, and
·        Projects to improve supportive learning environments in schools and within the local community.

How can I access a Youth Support Coordinator in my area?

There are several ways to access a YSC. If there is a YSC at your school, you can speak to them at school, contact them through the phone number given out by the school, or make an appointment with them through your school’s support staff (eg. Guidance Officer). If you are not sure whether there is a YSC at your school, you can ring the BABI Cleveland office on 3488 2533.

Who can make a referral to a Youth Support Coordinator?

·        Students (self-referrals),

·        Parents,
·        Teachers,
·        School support staff,
·        Community and health organisations.
