Youth Support

Youth Outreach

This service provides holistic, individualized, practical and case management support to at-risk young people (12 -21 years of age) who are living in the Wynnum and Redland areas. Support can be extended to 8-11 year-olds if they have a sibling already engaged in the program.

A support worker can help a young person to:

  • connect with family and community;
  • find safe, stable places to live;
  • engage in education and/or training;
  • engage in employment;
  • maintain physical & mental health; and
  • access other support agencies & specialist services based on their interests and needs.

Young at-risk people who live in the Wynnum/Manly and Redlands area are eligible for support under this program if they are:

  • homeless or at risk of homelessness;
  • not at school and not working or at risk of disengaging;
  • engaged with Youth Justice or Child Safety or at risk of it;
  • disconnected from family and community; and/or
  • in need of support with physical/mental health.

This service is tailored to the individual young person’s needs.  While it is not time limited, it is purposeful and works towards achieving goals to enable young people to develop skills and resilience in order to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.

Get Set for Work

Get Set for Work (GSFW) is a program aimed at improving the skills, employment opportunities and social inclusion of disadvantaged Queenslanders.  BABI is funded to provide this program under the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.

GSFW aims to provide young people aged 15-19 years with foundation skills that will enable them to successfully transition to employment and/or further education and training.  The training is nationally recognised and utilizes integrated learning support measures.

GSFW provides intensive support to the young people who:

  • Have already left school or are at risk of disengaging from school;
  • Are ineligible for Australian Government employment services or assistance;
  • Have significant barriers to learning and employment and require support to overcome these barriers;
  • Have accessed Australian Government employment services for more than six months and remain unemployed.

BABI works in partnership with Strategix, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), to deliver the Program.

The Program runs over eight weeks and focuses on integrated learner support including career advice and job preparation skills with additional ongoing support and case management for up to 12 months. There is no cost for participants.

Young people will get a chance to:

  • Complete a Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways Step4ward into Work
  • Participate in life skills, outdoor education and adventure-based learning
  • Participate in Work Experience and Industry Visits
  • Receive ongoing support to overcome anything that may be stopping them to find work or go on to further study.

To succeed young people need to:

  • Attend BABI’s GSFW orientation day;
  • Be willing to learn;
  • Be able to commit to an eight-week program;
  • Participate in and complete work experience; and
  • Be willing to engage in ongoing support to address barriers to finding employment.

Upcoming GSFW programs are advertised on BABI’s Facebook and Instagram pages.

The GSFW program is proudly funded by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training.

Contact BABI on 3393 4176 or email admin@babi.org.au for more information about GSFW and/or enrol in a program

 Youth Counselling

This service is solely community funded and operates in response to the perceived need in the local community for greater one-to-one support for young people struggling with poor mental health.

The service can be accessed by young people 12 – 25 years of age living in the Wynnum/Manly and surrounding areas.  It provides generalist counselling and support services.

BABI’s youth counsellors are qualified and experienced members of staff who provide a safe counselling environment.  Counselling appointments are offered on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons until 6.30pm and other times by special arrangement.

Counselling can help young people who:

  • Have experienced frightening or overwhelming events, or chronically stressful environments;
  • Find themselves using unhelpful coping strategies such as harmful substances, hurting themselves, engaging in unhealthy eating patterns etc.;
  • Are struggling with low mood, lack of motivation, dark thoughts etc.;
  • Feel overwhelmed by worries, nervousness, poor decision making and/or body agitation;
  • Experience difficulties getting along with people at school, home, work or anywhere that is important to them;
  • Are struggling to do the things that are important and necessary to live the life they want; and
  • Need someone safe to talk to about how their life is going.

For more information or to book an appointment, contact BABI on 3393 4176.

The Youth Counselling program is solely community funded.  The current funding was raised by the local charity, Celebrations for a Cause Manly, at their main fundraising event in November 2021.  $70,000 was at that event which has assisted in filling the huge gap for mental health services for youth in our local community.

“It can take more than just a roof to solve homelessness.  Having somewhere safe to live is the most important first step.  Being homeless can make you feel very small, vulnerable, dis-empowered and alone. It can make you feel like you have no control over your world.”

Help us make a difference in our community.
